Cecil BeatonQueen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration

Dundee has been selected as the first location to host the V&A's exhibition of portraits of Her Majesty The Queen by photographer Cecil Beaton, to celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee. This is the first in a series of partnership projects between The McManus and the V&A, as part of the pre-opening programme for the V&A at Dundee.

Presenting highlights of the V&A's archive of Beaton's royal photography, Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration will depict The Queen in her roles as princess, monarch and mother.

The exhibition will run at The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum from Friday 30 September 2011 to Sunday 8 January 2012.

Hugo VickersHugo Vickers - The Queen & Cecil Beaton

Cecil Beaton photographed some of the most fascinating, evocative and important characters of the 20th century. A teenage princess when she first sat for him in 1942, the Queen was photographed by Beaton on many significant occasions, including her Coronation Day. This talk, by acclaimed biographer Hugo Vickers, explores Beaton's development as a royal photographer, the role he played in portraying The Queen and the long relationship between photographer and regal model. Hugo Vickers is an expert on Cecil Beaton, giving five years of his life to reading all 150 of Beaton's diaries. He is Cecil Beaton's authorised biographer and literary executor. Also an acknowledged expert on the Royal Family, Vickers is frequently called to comment on royal matters.

As part of the Cecil Beaton exhibition at The McManus, internationally renowned artist & photographer Calum Colvin will talk about his innovative and intriguing approach to portraiture. Colvin's talk will be an autobiographical journey, describing some of the narratives and thought processes in his work, which has consistently referred to Scotland and it's heritage. Describing his early influences, which include the photographer Cecil Beaton, and the use of portraiture as a central focus in his work over the last 30 years, the lecture offers a rare opportunity to hear how his visually exciting and humorous works are created.

Calum Colvin was was awarded an OBE in 2001 and is Professor of Fine Art Photography at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Colvin's work is held in numerous collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Museum of Fine Art, Houston; The Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow.

This pubic lecture is part of the V&A at Dundee's first Masterclass programme where Colvin's innovative approach to photography forms the basis of the 3-day professional development workshop. 23-25 November 2011.
