REX is an internationally-acclaimed architecture and design firm based in New York City. Recently completed work includes the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre for the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, Texas and the Istanbul headquarters for Vakko and Power Media in Turkey. Cultural projects in progress include Museum Plaza in Louisville, Kentucky and the Central Library and Music Conservatory in Kortrijk, Belgium.
In the past year REX received second prize in two international competitions: one for the new Edvard Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway; the other for the Finnish Innovation Fund's Low2No sustainable development in Helsinki, Finland.
Founded in 2000 as OMA New York, REX was renamed in 2006 after the company severed ties with OMA. Previous projects (as OMA New York) include the Guggehneim-Hermitage Museum, The Guggenheim's Las Vegas Museum and the Seattle Central Library, which has received multiple accolades.
"Despite an increased need to accommodate change, contemporary design still relies on an antiquated version of flexibility: one size fits all. The ultimate result of this simplification, however, is each program competing for survival in an unresponsive building. Holding program clusters distinct and addressing potential evolutions on individual terms allows each cluster's design to develop—and subsequently evolve after building completion—without sacrificing the capabilities of any other. The V&A at Dundee's program can be clearly divided into four groups: by retaining a level of autonomy between these program types, a malleable organisation can be formed, robust enough to accept stakeholder feedback during design and beyond without jeopardizing the building's overall coherence and beauty. 'The Bluebell' takes these responses as the catalysts to its design strategy."
The REX design team for the V&A project includes Magnusson Klemencic Associates (USA), DCI (USA), Buro Happlod (USA), Bureau Bas Smets (Belgium), Lord Cultural Resources (USA) and Urban Splash Group (UK).
